Turn a bright white PDF into a readable dark document
Why reading a white PDF at night is uncomfortable, what inversion does to images and charts, and when greyscale or sepia is a better choice than full inversion.
The short answer
Inversion produces a new PDF where light backgrounds become dark and dark text becomes light, which is far more comfortable to read in a dim room. Because it is applied to rendered pages, photographs and colour charts are inverted too and can look wrong, so greyscale or sepia is often the better choice for image-heavy documents.

Reading a white PDF in a dark room is genuinely unpleasant, and turning the screen brightness down does not fix it. The problem is contrast against the surrounding darkness, not absolute brightness — a dim white page is still a bright rectangle in a dark room, and your eyes keep adjusting.
What inversion actually does
The colour inversion tool renders each page and applies a tonal transformation, producing a new PDF. The four useful modes solve different problems:
Inverted. Every colour is replaced by its opposite. White becomes black, black becomes white, and mid greys stay in the middle. This is the strongest option and the best for text-only documents read at night.
Dark. A softer treatment that darkens the background without pushing it to pure black. Often more comfortable for long reading sessions than full inversion, because pure white text on pure black can produce a haloing effect around letterforms.
Sepia. Warm background, dark text. This does not reduce brightness as much as the dark modes, but the reduced blue content is easier on the eyes in the evening and it reads more like paper.
Greyscale. No inversion at all — colour is simply removed. Useful for printing economically, for reducing visual noise in a heavily coloured document, and for checking that a design still works without colour.
Where inversion goes wrong
Inversion applies to the whole page, and it has no concept of what the page contains. That is fine for text and disastrous for pictures.
- Photographs become negatives. Faces turn blue, skies turn orange, and the image becomes unreadable rather than merely styled.
- Charts invert their meaning. A chart designed with a light-to-dark scale now reads backwards, and colour-coded legends no longer match convention.
- Logos break. Brand marks in inverted colours look wrong to anyone who knows the brand.
- Highlighted text can disappear. A yellow highlight inverts to dark blue, which against light text may be less legible than the original.
The practical rule: full inversion for text documents, papers, statutes, and manuscripts. Greyscale or sepia for anything with meaningful images. If a document is half and half, inverting the text sections and leaving the plates alone is not something a page-level transformation can do, so pick the mode that protects whichever content matters more.
The output is a rendered document
Because the transformation works on rendered pages, the result is a raster PDF. This has consequences worth knowing before you replace your original:
- The page becomes an image, so the crisp vector text of the source is now pixels. It looks fine at normal zoom and softens when magnified heavily.
- Selectable text, links, bookmarks, and form fields do not survive the render in the way they did in the source.
- File size usually increases, sometimes substantially, because pages of text compress far better as text than as images.
So treat the inverted file as a reading copy, not a replacement. Keep the original for searching, quoting, and archiving.
Alternatives worth considering first
Inversion is not always the best answer to "this is uncomfortable to read".
- Your reader may already do it. Many PDF readers and browsers offer a night or dark viewing mode that inverts on display without modifying the file. If that works, it is strictly better, since nothing is rendered and nothing is lost.
- Reflowable formats adapt properly. Converting to EPUB with the EPUB export tool gives a document whose text reflows and whose colours the reading app controls, which is a far better experience on a phone or e-reader than any fixed-page treatment.
- Listening instead of reading. For long documents at the end of a long day, the audio export tool produces speech from the text and removes the screen from the equation entirely.
- Cropping the margins. A document with enormous white margins is mostly bright empty space. Trimming it, as covered in the cropping guide, reduces the glare without changing a single colour.
Use file-level inversion when you need the dark version to persist — reading on a device whose reader has no night mode, distributing a dark copy, or archiving a version for a specific reading context. For everything else, try the viewer setting first.
